getPDFReport does not print Chinese characters in the PDF

Description
When trying to create a PDF report with Chinese text, it does not print the Chinese characters.
While the generated HTML file (renderTemplate) does show the text correctly.
Velocity 3.5.53

Looks like the fonts are inserted in the PDF encoded in ANSI, instead of UTF.
No idea where in the xhtmlRenderer and iText this happens and if I will be able to fix it.
